Chemist and perfume manufacturer Rene Maurice Gattefosse made major discoveries in the benefits of the essential oil lavender when in a laboratory accident in 1910 an explosion severely burned Gattefosse. The French chemist had only lavender essential oil nearby to soothe the burns. He plunged his arm into the tub of liquid and was amazed at the results. In rinsing his hand and arm with lavender, he noticed that it stopped “the gasification on the tissue.” His burns quickly healed with very little scarring. With initial motivation, Gattefosse began extensive research into many essential oils - ones previously used for perfumes were not studied for medicinal benefits.
